Who We Are

Diamond Shoal Shrimp Company is a descendant of Gene Carawan. He began his commercial fishing career catching carp in Mattamuskeet Lake. He and his brothers then began crabbing out of Outfall Canal. They soon decided to build a picking facility, Mattamuskeet Seafood, to process their crabs. Then they built a buying station in Engelhard and another in Rose Bay. Eventually the brothers stopped crabbing and became managers. After their retirements the three businesses were separated, and one family took each business.

Diamond Shoal Shrimp Company was born from the buying facility in Engelhard. Our shrimp come from mostly small trawlers or skimmers that unload several times each week, some daily. They are 100% natural, never processed or imported and are chemical-free.

Our goal is for more people all across the United States to have effortless access to quality seafood harvested North Carolina.

We have grown and changed through the years, but we're still making our living from the same waters my father did.
